    Description - Workshop 1

Practice Makes Perfect: Developing an Interpreting Practice Strategy to Achieve Success

Whether you are preparing for an exam or simply want to keep your skills up, a defined strategy for practice sessions is the key to productive interpreting practice. Even if you work as a full-time interpreter, there is nothing like the deep reflection and analysis of your performance in a practice session to help you hone your craft. A solid interpreting skill improvement strategy includes honest self-assessment and setting specific goals for every practice session that go beyond “take good notes,” “master all technical vocabulary,” or “interpret everything perfectly.” This session will cover goal-setting, resources for practice material, honing your language and vocabulary skills in your downtime, giving and receiving feedback, and tips for solo and group practice. Participants will try their hand at practical exercises that help hone an interpreter’s skill with a special focus on paraphrasing, a valuable exercise that builds the mental agility necessary for interpretation. This workshop is suitable for experienced interpreters looking to get unstuck and achieve a long-desired goal of passing a specific exam, beginners who feel overwhelmed with the daunting task of learning this craft, and anyone in between!

    Description - Workshop 2

Interpreting for Head Injury Cases: It doesn't have to be traumatic!

Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of death and disability in the United States.  Testimony about these injuries by expert witnesses and the victims themselves may be crucial to many kinds of civil and criminal cases.  Participants will learn about the causes of traumatic brain injury, the different types, and their symptoms.  The session will also examine how these injuries can affect speech and cognition, and how this impacts the work of the interpreter in the medical setting and the courtroom. Participants will have the opportunity to work with authentic medical documents related to head trauma and practice sight translation and interpreting content related to this topic.
