This presentation is intended for anyone who is new to the field of medical interpreting. It is an introduction to healthcare interpreting that will cover basic concepts central to any setting: pre-session, positioning and concepts of sight translation. Resources for codes of ethics and standards of practice will be provided.

Learning Objectives

1. Review the 6 ethical principles of interpreting according to the CHIA standards.
2. Identify the modes, roles and standardized protocols used when interpreting, including pre-session, post-session, and first person vs. third person.
3. Review techniques on how to intervene and clarify during the session and note-taking.

Lourdes L Cerna, CMI, CHI, is a Medical Spanish interpreter, Translator and Trainer with over 35 years of healthcare interpreting experience that includes and is not limited to interpreting in private and county hospitals and clinics, over-the-phone and VRI interpreting, and freelance worker compensation, cases as well as interpreting for school districts, conference interpreting for several entities and organizations. Ms. Cerna has taught a medical interpreting curriculum at several colleges and currently teaches a 40-hour healthcare interpreting training curriculum. She also developed an award winning curriculum for Indigenous Interpreters for an organization in Ventura County that serves the Mixteco community. She has received the Distinction of Education award from the International Medical Interpreters Association and the Trainer of the Year award from CHIA. Ms. Cerna is a native of Guatemala. She currently serves on the CHIA Board of Directors.
