Genetics is a broad and complex subject. Some interpreters may have received classes on genetics as part of high school or college biology, while others may know nothing about genetics at all. This introductory class is designed to give a basic overview of the key concepts in genetics in general, and cancer genetics specifically. The training was designed by Cynthia E. Roat, MPH; Galen Joseph, PhD; Claudia Guerra, MSW; Janice Cheng, PhD; Robin Lee, LCGC; and Karlena Lara-Otero, PhD; with funding from The University of California, San Francisco, Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Give Breast Cancer the Boot.

Elena Morrow, CT, was born and raised in Ukraine, city of Cherkassy. She majored in Russian language and literature at Ukraine's State University. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from CSU Sacramento in 1996. Elena has over 20 years of experience working as an interpreter, translator, and language skills assessor. Elena is the Manager of Medical Interpreting Services at UC Davis Health Systems, supervising a team of 45 interpreters and translators. She received her national certification in written translation from English to Russian from the American Translators Association in 2007, and in 2010 the Trainer of the year award from CHIA.

Claudia Ribota Lindgren, CHI, is a Certified Healthcare Interpreter who interprets primarily in legal and medical settings. She works consistently to stay on top of this quickly-developing field.

Claudia has over 20 years of experience interpreting in on-site encounters and remotely via telephone, video, and video conferencing. Claudia has facilitated cancer-support groups, and has received extensive specialized training in oncology. In order to meet her clients' demands for accurate and precise interpretations, Claudia has developed several effective techniques for supporting communication between providers and LEPs.
