Continuing Education

CHIA supports the professional goals of interpreters, and embraces the opportunity to offer Continuing Education Units that are valid for both national certifications at our regional trainings and our Annual Educational Conference, starting with our 2013 Conference in San Diego.

CHIA encourages employers to support the Continuing Education of their employees and contractors who provide interpreting in health care settings through CHIA membership, and attendance to our regional trainings and annual conference.

Continuing Education Units for Healthcare/Medical Interpreters

Generally, one CEU is equal to 10 hours of training.

  • ATA, the American Translators Association issues Continuing Education Points or CEP. One point equals one hour of creditworthy activity (training).
  • CCHI, the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters issues Continuing Education Instructional Hours or CE hours.
  • IMIA, the International Medical Interpreters Association utilizes a credit system whereby 0.1 continuing education units is equivalent 1 hour of instruction. One IMIA CEU is equivalent to 10 hours of instruction.

Information for Certified Healthcare Interpreters - CHI:

The Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters accepts a variety of documents as proof of continuing education, including but not limited to attending all CEAP programs. CEAP is CCHI's Continuing Education Accreditation Program.

Programs (trainings) accredited under CCHI's CEAP are accredited for hours of instruction, a 2-hour training would be accredited for 2 continuing education instructional hours.

Information for Certified Medical Interpreters - CMI:

While the National Board has been automatically accepting ATA, RID, and CCHI-CEAP continuing education hours as if they were IMIA/NBCMI CEUs, this will no longer be the case effective 01/01/2018. ATA, RID, or CCHI-CEAP CEUs received prior to 01/01/2018 will continue to be honored for recertification--as long as the topics are related to medical interpreting knowledge and skills enhancement. After 01/01/2018, only IMIA/NBCMI CEUs will be automatically accepted.

However, CMIs may still complete continuing education activities for credit with CHIA. Events listed on the CHIA webpage beginning in 2018 will indicate which events (webinars, regional trainings, annual conference) offer valid IMIA/NBCMI CEUs.
